I keep meaning to write and then ending up doing something that involves nothing more than mindless staring at a screen. Which sounds suspiciously similar to work on some days. I have the memory of a flea because I (think I) coast through life not paying enough attention to things, which is somewhat ironic considering that the thing I find most rewarding in my professional life involves real, genuine listening to people. When I’m not in that mode, though, I worry that all the precious memories I should be keeping forever in my mind will disappear if I don’t help myself by recording some of them here, so I can be delighted when I chance across them, maybe when I’m old and grey, or nostalgic, or lonely. So at some point in the future I am going to write about all the things that the little one is learning to say, and how I’m feeling remarkably positive about my professional life at the moment, because I think I’ve identified my vocation and I’m taking concrete steps to get there. For tonight, however, I’ll just finish off with the memory of last weekend when we scoured ingredient lists and thought hard about what additional allergen was making the nut-allergic toddler red and blotchy and puffy, only to discover that Him had put mirin in the scrambled eggs two days running. Social services, anyone?

Hello Again 6 January, 2009

I have so much to write (or think I do), but blogging is currently being pipped to the post by deciding where to put my erstwhile Icesave ISA funds. Or tackling the huge pile of ironing. Or updating Ethan’s website. Or catching up on emails.

Me: Oh, is that our new humidifer?
Him: Yup.
Me: It looks like a TV.
Him: You can watch it if you want.

Or maybe watching a humidifer.

AWOL and up close and present again 6 March, 2007

I’ve been away so long I nearly forgot what my password to this site was. The protracted hiatus has meant that first I had lots of interesting things to blog about, then somewhere in the vaults of time I had not enough time to craft them into their blisteringly incisive birthright, and yet later so much time had passed that now I can’t remember what I meant to blog about in the first place.

But I intend to be back properly in due course. For now, Him has provided you with some blog fodder.

Me: I like most people but some people are just really really annoying. Rah! Grrr. Snarl. {gnashes teeth}
Him: It’s that time of the month again.
Me: You’d better not be one of those people who blames everything on PMT.
Him: But it’s true. Everything sort of gets amplified.
Me: AMPLIFIED? What do you mean AMPLIFIED? I’m so normal I couldn’t possibly be more normal. I am uber-normal. I’ll hex you.
Him: I won’t cook you dinner.
Me: Blackmail!!!
Him: No, I’m Chinese.

Epiphanies and Homecomings 24 September, 2006

Crikey, it’s been a while. One thing after another has conspired to keep me away from the blogging fraternity. It all started out with various epiphanies somewhere around Easter – a terribly long tale, and perhaps too close to the heart for a public space – followed by an escape up North, a visit from the in-laws and the usual approach-of-term-where-did-the-summer-go madness, but I have now returned to the fold, bigger (maybe), better (maybe not), and infinitely happier (without a doubt). Included in this mix are an exhumed love for climbing – and if I ever get around to it I plan to create Nat’s Climbing Page somewhere next to the dormant Songs of The Moment – and gratification for being alive (albeit also spotty, which I’m somewhat less exuberant about). But I figure you love me anyway (or should).

I will now go to try and catch up.

Teddy Thompson - Separate Ways album cover

Separate Ways – Teddy Thompson
4 out of 5 stars

I bought this last week on the strength of his representation on my Brokeback Mountain soundtrack, and have decided that this was a Very Good Decision. Him has described Teddy’s voice as ‘inoffensive’, but didn’t object to it while simultaneously denouncing Will Young and declaring his well-laid plans to dispose of any Will Young CDs should any such items ever find their way into our house, so I’m guessing ‘inoffensive’ is a thinly-veiled synonym for ‘yeah, pretty good’.

I’m far from being a cultured audiophile so will merely say that I love tracks 1, 3 and 7 (and IMO there isn’t a dud track anywhere on the album).

It occurred to me the other day that Him hasn’t been giving me sufficient blogging material lately, hence the dearth of posts. It also occurred to me that it’s been a long time since I have had cause to assign any posts to the Peabrain category. I plan to prod us into submission shortly.

My sister has just told me that she likes my new blog and its theme because it’s nice and drab and she can read it at work while appearing like she’s doing something productive.

Follow-up to Anonymous Blog

As you can see, I’ve moved! And that I’ve ended up with a WordPress blog, not on WordPress.org but on WordPress.com, because it’s fantastic (and because I didn’t need my own webspace due to the good people at WordPress having introduced a free hosted service, complete with newly-introduced import features from Moveable Type/Typepad and Blogger ;)).

I anticipate being able to do some updates soon – watch this space.
