Hate to break this to you but Nan is South… Dong is East… The Chinese go East, South, West, North….

A little PS – Dong Fang means the Orient. That’s possibly what might have confused you.

I learnt Mandarin for twelve years, more’s the pity. My Mandarin is generally not this bad (really). For some reason I have a mental block when it comes to direction. In some remote part of my brain I am sure I understand this.

And it’s not because of dong fang? it’s more because of chun1 xia4 qiu1 dong1.

NB: The lack of context in my apparent inability to understand this is why this isn’t particularly funny unless you actually had the bad fortune of growing up with me. In truth this is a language I grew up surrounded by (notwithstanding studiously avoiding actually having to speak it apart from in Chinese classes).

Actually, come to think of it, maybe this isn’t funny. Maybe this is, truly, just rather sad. Bah.

I can too ok.

“Uncle, yi4 wan3 yu2 yuan2 mi3 fen3! Gan1 de!”

Mwahahahahahaha. I’m just waiting for the language vultures now.

Oh, and I forgot the man in the Chinese medicine shop in Vancouver telling us that our Mandarin was really good! Though in hindsight, maybe he was talking about Him.

Ahem.
